Dysfunctional Breathing

Most people's answer about breathing is "If you are breathing you are still alive," or "either you're are breathing or you're not" with no real concern about your method of breathing. Well, I'm here to tell you that how you breathe not only affects your health and well being but how you breathe has a profound affect on the facial growth of young children and the successful results, long term, of orthodontic treatment. Our modern diet is a big contributing (allergic) factor affecting the nasal- pharyngeal tissues through which air must pass into the trachea and lungs.

At Rider Orthodontics we consider nasalized breathing to be of such tremendous importance to the health and well being of our patients that part of our diagnosis involves a rhino-metric breathing test to assess nasal breathing capacity, and an evaluation of intranasal anatomy and obstructive size of adenoids and tonsils as contributing obstructive factors. We further assess the size and shape of the upper and lower jaws, and tongue posture as contributing elements if a mouth open breathing pattern exists.

If indicated, the patient is referred to a well informed ENT physician for his/her assessment and treatment if indicated. A change in diet may be recommended to eliminate foods known to create nasal obstruction. Reconstructive orthopedic/orthodontic may be required to widen the upper jaw and nasal cavity but this will not be successful long-term if the child cannot breathe through their nose full time. Special lip and tongue exercises may be prescribed to strengthen the lip musculature and encourage nasalized breathing. Lip taping during sleep to force nasal breathing may be suggested after the obstructions have been removed. Follow-up breathing tests are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment.

I have successfully treated hundreds of adults with upper airway problems associated with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (before and after sleep studies) over the last thirty years using the removable Herbst device. If you snore call my office for an assessment of your problem. How well you breathe through your nose is an important health issue throughout your life and I suggest you Google "mouth breathing" for a more thorough explanation of this most important and underrated health issue. Knowledge is power! You need answers.

Non-surgical treatment of snoring, and/or obstructive sleep apnea problems:

Snoring is NOT just a nuisance, it is a symptom of an obstructive upper airway disease and the fact it occurs while we sleep makes it even more serious. If you or someone in your family snores please understand that the body is trying to tell you something is wrong with your breathing system. For many people snoring is a precursor to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious health problem that kills thousands and thousands of people in the US every year. If you are overweight, smoke or drink heavily and have OSA, your days are numbered unless YOU wake up and deal with this problem NOW. Call my office and I will help you help yourself do what it takes to restore health and vitality to your life, allow you to return from the couch to your bed and add peace and quite to sleep pattern of your spouse.

I have provided non-surgical treatment for adults with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea problems since 1984 having successfully treated over six-hundred clients referred to me by our local sleep centers and ENT physicians. I am the most experienced and knowledgeable snoring and

OSA dental health provider in the Charlotte area with published papers in the CMC news letter, Journal of Clinical Orthodontics and a chapter in Baylor University's Department of Orthodontics book "Orthodontics in The Twenty-First Century".

More importantly, my real mission in the area of snoring and OSA is to provide a specific orthodontic service for children d to create a healthy dentofacial environment and health education designed to prevent snoring and OSA as they mature into adulthood.

Dear Dr. Rider:

You may have forgotten about my promise to send you before and after pictures of my grandson Robert.  It is a joy to see his bright and shiny eyes without the terrible bags and circles under them.

After his tonsillectomy he is no longer hyperactive, acting just like a normal happy little boy who didn't know how it felt to feel good. Thank you for all you have done for us. We know you are a physician who really cares about the health of his patients.

Sincerely, Ellen

Dear Dr. Rider,

I would like to thank you for referring my son Joshua to Dr. B. regarding his tonsils and adenoids. As you know, he was having to breathe from his mouth, day and night due to their size. He also has, for about two years, suffered from chronic sinus infections which made him miserable about ninety percent of the time.

I cannot tell you what a difference it has made since Joshua had his tonsils and adenoids removed last fall. He breathes through his nose all the time now and he literally has not been sick one day since that time! He seems to have more energy now and is just a happy little boy because he feels so much better.

We are now in the process of preparing for daughter Ashley to have her tonsils and adenoids removed also. We have taken her to two ENT doctors and they both agree hers need to be removed due to their size. Her symptoms are different in some ways because she has been very prone to ear infections and strep throat. She is also a very heavy mouth-breather at night. We look forward to a much better winter for her, come this fall.

Thank you again for your concerns and advice.

Sincerely, Carol
